Oktober - Dezember/October - December 2009

Feliz Navidad y prospero ano nuevo!

Der Oktober war für uns ein sehr stressiger Monat da Emily an Keuchhusten erkrankt war. Da es ihr sehr schlecht ging musste sie sogar fuer eine Woche ins Krankenhaus. Diese Zeit war für uns ganz schlimm. Freunde standen uns helfend zur Seite und Joel’s Mutter hat alles stehen und liegen lassen und ist kurzfristig fuer 3 Wochen gekommen.
Mittlerweile geht es ihr schon wieder gut Sie hustet zwar immer noch, aber nicht mehr so viel. Die Japaner nennen den Keuchhusten auch “100 Tage Husten”.

Am 25. Oktober ist Andrew 3 Jahre alt geworden. Wir haben für ihn eine Geburtstagsparty im Garten veranstaltet und eine Hüpfburg für die Kids aufgebaut. Leider ist Andrew mit einem anderen Junge mit dem Kopf zusammengestossen und hat eine riesig grosse Beule auf der Stirn und 2 Tage später 2 blaue Augen davongetragen. Guckt Euch die Fotos an – nach dem ersten Schreck konnten wir auch darüber lachen. Zu Halloween brauchten wir ihn zumindest nicht verkleiden.

Andrew hat gelernt alleine auf die Toilette zu gehen und nach 2 Wochen Uebung hat er von uns sein Abschluss-Zertifikat bekommen, er ist nun ein “Super Dooper Pooper”.

Emily wird immer aktiver, sie quietscht vor sich hin, greift nach Spielsachen oder was immer ihr in den Weg kommt und kann sich schon von einer auf die andere Seite rollen. Seit kurzem verändert sich ihr „Speiseplan“ und sie entdeckt Leckereien aus dem Gläschen. Karotten sind ja so lecker ☺ Trotzdem bevorzugt sie immer noch die Milch.

Thanksgiving (Erntedankfest) ist normalerweise ein Fest wo die ganze Fanmilie (mit Tanten & Onkels etc...) zusammenkommen, aber wir haben es ganz ruhig zu viert im Kreise unserer Familie gefeiert und das war nach all’ dem Stress richtig schoen. Wir haben mit Andrew gebastelt und gespielt. Essenstechnisch haben wir das typisch amerikanische Traditionsessen gekocht: Truthahn, Bohnen, Kartoffelpueree, suesse Kartoffeln, Dressing etc…

Nun freuen wir uns auf Weihnachten. Hier in Spanien wird Weihnachten sehr gross gefeiert u.a. mit Weihnachtsmaerkten. Nicole’s Eltern kommen fuer 2 Wochen ueber Weihnachten & Neujahr zu Besuch.
Auf dem Base werden zur Weihnachtszeit einige Aktivitaeten fuer Kinder angeboten wie z.B. ein Besuch bei dem Weihnachtsmann/Santa Clause und eine Fahrt mit dem Polarexpress zum Nordpol.

October was a stressful month for us all. Emily got whooping cough and ended up in the hospital for a week. It was a very tough time for us, but thankfully she recovered well, but as is typical, over 2 months later she is still coughing. Apparently this is known as the “100 day cough” in many Asian countries for good reason. During this time we had the help of some friends, and Joel’s Mom dropped everything to come out and helped us for 3 weeks. It turned out better and quicker than feared, but it was good to have the help nevertheless.

Andrew had his 3rd birthday on the 25th of October and while celebrating on a “bouncy house” he and a friend apparently butted heads quite hard. He had an enormous cartoon-sized lump on his forehead and also 2 black eyes thereafter. It was bad and we were actually concerned about a real head injury, but since he wouldn’t quit playing, it was reassuring (see pictures).

After about 2 weeks of practice Andrew learned to use the potty. He even received an official diploma certifying him as a “Super Dooper Pooper”. He still needs a little help with the hygiene part, but overall he does great and is justifiably proud of himself. Dad is almost ready to declare him ready to inherit the deed to “Papa’s Legos”. This was part of the deal from the beginning of the process.

Emily is babbling more and more, plays intensely with her toys or whatever she can reach out and grab. She rolls from one side to the other whenever she likes, and recently has started eating carrots and other tasty pureed delicacies from a jar. Of course mostly she’s still a fan of milk ☺

We also enjoyed some quiet family time for Thanksgiving. After the huge and tasty traditional meal, we made crafts with Andrew and played with Emily and were surprised at the end of it all by our neighbors (from Puerto Rico) and about 30 of their Spanish friends. All of the sudden outside our door they began to play drums and sing very loudly. It is some kind of tradition, akin to Christmas caroling for us. It was a lot of fun.

Now we look forward to Christmas itself. The Spaniards do a pretty good job of making up for the lack of snow and sleigh bells with nice Christmas markets, lights, and Nativity Scenes. (Quite ornate and life size) Nicole’s parents will join us for two weeks to help us celebrate. In addition to all this, the base is also putting on some nice events for the kids. Andrew will certainly enjoy his ride aboard the “Polar Express” all the way to Santa’s Workshop at the North Pole
