January 2009 / Sayonara Japan-Hola Espana

This update has big news from the Ahlgrims: Andrew will be getting a little sister!
The due date is June 10th and we can hardly wait. At this point it appears that Joel will be back home from his deployment sooner than expected. That means that we can move on to our next big project which is packing boxes and getting ready for the big move to Spain. With a little luck that move might happen as soon as March, but the pregnancy adds a few more variables to the equation. For reasons too complex to explain, there is also a chance that we could get delayed just long enough to miss Nicole's window for safe air travel, in which case we'd be stuck until after the birth AND getting all the passports etc. That could be August!

For the time being, Joel is still aboard the USNS Stockham and cruising out across the vast Pacific Ocean. Last month he was able to get off the ship for a while in the lovely garden spot of Zamboanga in order to help teach some medical courses (Advanced Cardiac Life Support) to nurses and paramedics of various Philippine military units as well as the Red
Cross. It was a fun change from the daily grind aboard the ship and was genuinely enjoyed and appreciated by the class members. This trip ashore also provided the opportunity to visit a few other small sites with American medical personnel. He enjoyed flying around the islands via turboprop and helicopters as much as actually doing class he went there for.

Andrew & Nicole are doing well. They celebrated Christmas with friends on base. Over New Years Nicole kindly provided baby sitting services for 2 kids of some friends and enjoyed introducing some other friends to Raclett grilling (a small electric tabletop grill with little drawers for making tons of miniature little creations). In January Nicole & Andrew enjoyed taking day trips to Yokohama and to the Enoshima aquarium. Andrew really had a great time and touched a Lobster for the first time.

Even though she has been busy with Andrew, Nicole has still managed to get in some fun for herself as well this month. She actually managed to enjoy 3 child-free evenings with friends. One outing was with her Japanese-American social group and she went "Mochi Pounding". This involves beating a rice paste with big wooden clubs for a long time until it becomes a strangely elastic substance called Mochi that Japanese people really love and seem to have at the core of all kinds of delicacies and almost all of their desserts. It was a very memorable experience. Later she enjoyed a surprise party and a girl's movie night.

At this point we are just waiting on the final outcome of Joel's deployment and hope that official decisions are made that will allow us to bring the Japanese chapter of our lives to a close and begin the next adventure in Spain!
