Juli 2008 & Oma Inge's Besuch/visit

Es hat sich viel getan in den letzten Monaten, denn wir haben endlich die "orders" fuer Joel's naechsten Job bekommen. Nun steht es fest, dass Joel fuer 6 Monate im November auf ein Schiff geht. In dieser Zeit bleiben Nicole & Andrew in Japan. Joel wird dann voraussichtlich im May wieder zurueck nach Japan kommen. Im Juli gehen wir (falls nichts mehr dazwischen kommt) fuer 3 Jahre nach Rota, Spanien (Andalusien). Es ist in der Naehe von Cadiz, Jerez und Sevilla. Wir freuen uns schon sehr darauf, denn das ist das erste Mal, dass wir in der Naehe von Nicole's Familie sind.

Im Juni war Nicole's Mutter (Inge) fuer 4 Wochen hier und wir haben die gemeinsame Zeit sehr genossen. Vor allem war es schoen fuer Andrew seine Oma wiederzusehen. Andrew hat sie direkt wiedererkannt und in sein Herz geschlossen. Wir haben eine - vom Base organisierte - Tour mit dem Shinkansen (eines der schnellsten Zuege auf der Welt) gemacht Es war zwar ein sehr langer Tag war, aber es war eine schoene Tour.
Nicole's Mutter war ueber den 04.Juli hier, was in Amerika sehr gross gefeiert wird - es ist der Unabhaengigkeitstag. Es war richtig viel los auf dem Base mit Essbuden, Spielstaende fuer Kinder, etc... und abends gab es zum Abschluss ein Feuerwerk.

Wir geniessen im Moment den Sommer mit Tagestouren und BBQ's mit Freunden. Dann sind wir nach Yokohma zum "Sea Paradies" (was - im keineren Rahmen - wie Sea World in USA ist) gefahren, was Andrew in vollen Zuegen genossen hat. Vor allem die Delfin-Show hat ihm besonders gut gefallen.
Dann sind wir zu einem "Hawaiian Luau" (Hawaii Abend mit Essen & Show) gegangen. Zuerst hatten wir gedacht, dass Andrew nicht so lange aushaelt, aber er war super gut drauf und hat bei der Show die ganze Zeit mitgetanzt. Also war der Abend ein voller Erfolg! :-)
Wir hatten die Meoglichkeit beim Tag der offen Tuer der "Japanischen Military Self Defence Force" (JMSDF) teilzunehmen, was sehr interessant war mal das japanische Miliaer(system) kennenzulernen.

Andrew hat eine Tour bei der Feuerwehr auf dem Base bekommen und fand' es ganz toll in dem Feuerwehrauto zu sitzten und all' die Feuerwehrmaenner kennenzulernen, denen er sonst immer nur zuwinkt, wenn sie vorbeifahren.
Nicole hat wieder bei dem Tennisturnier auf dem Base mitgespielt und mit dem Krankenhaus-Team den 1.Platz belegt. Sie hat auch angefangen mit einer Bekannten 5x/Woche morgens zu joggen. Nun ist auch sie unter die Videomacher gegangen und schneidet die Videos fuer die Web-Site.
Joel arbeitet im Moment sehr viel, da sie im Krankenhaus - anstelle von 8 Aerzten - nur Zwei sind. Im Sommer ist immer die "Wechsel-Saison" (viele gehen zurueck nach USA und bis die Neuen kommen, sind die Aerzte knapp) und einige sind in Kuwait, Afghanistan & im Irak. In seiner freien Zeit arbeitet er immer noch an den Familienvideos und geniesst seinen Sohn (und natuerlich seine Frau ;-)

So, das war es mal wieder von uns - im August gibt es das naechste "update"! Wir haben wieder viele neue Bilder unter "Photos" (klickt rechts weiter oben auf Photos) geladen. Wir wuenschen Euch allen einen schoenen Sommer & bis bald.

Quite a lot has happened in the last few months. Finally Joel received official orders to his new job in Rota, Spain. Now it is (relatively) certain that we are getting the deal we had negotiated for. Before that happens, Joel will be spending 6 months away on a ship. He leaves in November and Nicole & Andrew will wait for him in Japan. If everything goes as expected, Joel will be home in May and in July we will move to Spain for a 3 year tour. Rota is in Andalusia and is near Cadiz & Seville. We are really excited about it, and it will also be an opportunity to live near (on the same continent at least) as Nicole's parents.

In June, Nicole's mother came for a 4-week visit. We really enjoyed spending the time together. Best of all was the chance for Inge to see Andrew again and how much he has grown. Andrew seemed to recognize her right away and they got along wonderfully. We took a base organized tour together which included a short trip on the Shinkansen. It
was a long day, especially for Andrew, but we all enjoyed it. Inge was also with us for the 4th of July, which is definitely a big celebration here on the base; just like back in the USA. There were plenty of BBQs, events for the kids, and of course fireworks to cap the evening. Andrew enjoyed every bit of it, and we loved watching him and his excitement with every boom and flash of light.

We continue to enjoy the summer season with plenty of backyard grilling with friends and day trips around the area. One of them was to Yokohama "Sea Paradise". It was sort of like a scaled-down Sea World. Andrew loved it, especially the dolphin show. After that, we went to a "Luau" at the Officer's Club on base. We thought Andrew might not be able to make it through such a long program, but he did great. Not only did he enjoy his tropical drinks and dinner, but he was totally fascinated by the dancers, and actually spent most of the show dancing along with them in front of the stage area.

Last week we had a chance to visit the Japanese Navy base across the harbor from our own. It was interesting to experience their Military facilities, and although the base is small compared to our own, they made a very nice atmosphere for visitors.

Andrew had a little side tour of the fire station here on base. He loved getting up close to the big red trucks and even got to sit in the driver's seat. Now that he has met all of the local firemen, he is always sure to waive whenever the fire trucks go past.

Nicole played in the Captain's Cup tennis tournament again, and almost single-handedly won 1st place for the hospital team. Now she has also started to jog with an acquaintance 5 times a week. She does it early in the morning before Joel's leaves for work so Andrew isn't alone, but this makes for long days. She has also started to work on editing short videos for the web site, and the results you can see here for yourself.


Joel is really busy at work these days since the Family Practice(FP)department is very understaffed at the moment due to deployments and the gap between people leaving and the replacements being ready to see patients. Our dept. normally has about 8 FP doctors, but at the moment, one is in Afghanistan, one is on a ship, and one is in Kuwait. In what little free time is left, he is busy working on family videos and enjoying playing with his Andrew and naturally Nicole as well.
