Deutschland/Germany

Nach dem langen Flug (14 Std.) waren wir froh endlich in Duesseldorf angekommen zu sein. Oma Inge, Opa Willy & Tante Sandra standen schon hinter der Absperrung und konnten es kaum erwarten ihren Enkel/Neffen zu sehen. Andrew ist mit Nicole (an der Hand) & Joel aus der Zollkontrolle gekommen ... allein klappt's noch nicht so recht, aber daran werden wir waehrend unseres Aufenthaltes in BRD arbeiten.

Zu hause angekommen, gingen Oma & Opa ihren Aufgaben (Verwoehnen des Enkelkindes) direkt nach und haben Andrew mit einem neuen Bett ueberrascht - nochmals vielen Dank Oma & Opa. Nun konnte der Nachtruhe ja nichts mehr im Wege stehen .... das dachten wir zumindestens, aber da war ja noch der "Jetlag" der leider im Wege einer "Guten Nacht" stand. Tja, die ersten paar Tage hatte - vor allem - Andrew sehr mit dem Jetlag zu kaempfen. Aber dann ging es auch schon wesentlich besser und so haben Oma & Opa den ersten Abend auf Andrew aufgepasst, so dass Nicole & Joel zu einem mittelalterlichen Weihanchtsmarkt in Siegburg gehen konnten. Das Handy hatten wir natuerlich immer parat, aber gebraucht haben wir es nicht :-) Ab nun wussten wir, dass Oma & Opa die Besten sind!

Da Oma Inge & Opa Willy nicht persoenlich an Andrew's 1.Geburtstag dabei sein konnten, haben wir den Geburtstag, mit einem selbstgebackenen Kuchen vom Opa, nachgefeiert. Nach anfaenglichem Verziehen des Gesichtes, hat Andrew den Kuchen nur noch "verschlungen".

Da Joel nur 2 Wochen bleiben konnte, mussten wir die Besuche unserer Freunde in die erste Zeit legen. Wie immer wurden wir bei allen mit leckerem Essen verwoehnt - dafuer nochmals vielen Dank!


Sandra & ihr Freund Marcel haben uns unser Weihnachtsgeschenk vorzeitig gegeben. Sie haben uns zu einer Tagestour zum Weihnachtsmarkt in Muenster eingeladen. Wir hatten einen wunderschoenen Tag mit Gluehwein und einem abschliessenden Abendessen in einem altdeutschen Restaurant.
Weihnachten haben wir ganz gemuehtlich mit der Familie verbracht. Andrew durfte zuerst seine Geschenke auspacken. Er hat sich mehr am Geschenkpapier als an den eigentlichen Geschenken erfreut; bis auf sein Karaoke-Buch .... mittlerweile ist er der Karaoke-Profi: er kann schon mitsingen- & tanzen.
Wir haben von Inge & Willy ein ganz tolles Geschenk zu Weihnachten bekommen: ein gemaltes Bild von Andrew.

Kurz nach Weihnachten hiess' es dann fuer Joel wieder die Koffer zu packen. Nicole & Andrew sind noch 2 Wochen laenger geblieben. Nicole hat wieder einige Sachen mit der Militaerpost verschickt und war damit beschaeftigt die Kisten zu packen. Silvester haben Andrew & Nicole ganz ruhig mit Oma & Opa verbracht, da bis auf Opa Willy alle krank waren. Joel musste Silvester leider arbeiten und hat das erste Militaerbaby in Japan zur Welt gebracht. Da er Derjenige war der die 2 Neujahrsbabies zur Welt gebracht hat, wurde er in der Militaerzeitung "Stars & Stripes" erwaehnt - falls ihr Lust habt Euch den Bericht durchzulesen, hier ist der Link: http://www.stripes.com/article.asp?section=104&article=51396

Zu dem Geburtstag von Opa Willy sind wir mit der ganzen Familie in Koeln in ein Restaurant "Im Marienbild" Essen gegangen. Dort ist Opa Willy schon vor 40 Jahren mit seiner Mutter Essen gegangen. Die Kneipe hat sich (natuerlich) ueber die Jahre sehr veraendert, aber anhand der Fotografien, die dort aufgehaengt waren, konnte man sich vorstellen wie es frueher ausgesehen hat. Andrew hat den Abend sehr genossen, denn er hat seine eigene Menukarte bekommen, hat selber bestellt und war ganz fasziniert von dem Kellner mit seinem Biertablett.

Tante Sandra hat sich Andrew, Nicole & Oma geschnappt und ist mit allen zum Kinderbauernhof im benachbarten Ort gefahren. Andrew hatte richtig viel Spass und hat sich ganz interessiert die Tiere angeguckt.
Spaeter haben wir uns den "Andrew Baum" (den er von Oma & Opa zu seiner Geburt geschenkt bekommen hat) in deren Garten angeguckt, der natuerlich sehr kahl aussah. Aber genauso wie Andrew ist er ein bisschen gewachsen :-)
Abschliessend zu unserem Deutschland Besuch muessen wir ja nun noch aufklaeren, ob Andrew Laufen gelernt hat oder nicht. Was glaubt ihr? JA - er kann laufen! YEAH! Das ist natuerlich super, aber auf der anderen Seite wird Nicole in Japan zu nichts mehr kommen ... ha ha ha!

Willkommen Japan!
Nachdem wir zurueck in Japan waren, hat der "Noro-Virus Andrew & Nicole eingeholt. Aber nun haben sie sich von dem Virus erholt und der Alltag kann beginnen. Joel fliegt Anfang Februar fuer 2 Wochen zu einer Konferenz nach Texas.

After the long, 14 hr flight, we were happy to be on the ground in Germany again. Grandma Inge, Grandpa Willy, and aunt Sandra were all waiting in the airport and could hardly wait to see little Andrew again. Andrew walked out (with a little help from Mommy) through customs to see the Streitbergs. He could not yet really walk by himself, but with a little assistance he could do pretty well. He had plenty of time in Germany to work on this some more.


As soon as we got to the house, Grandma & Grandpa got to work on their job of spoiling their grandchild. They surprised Andrew first with a brand-new bed for him to use when he is in Germany. Thanks again Grandma & Grandpa! Now he should have a comfortable night’s sleep. At least we hoped so, but there were still a few days of Jet Lag to get over before the peaceful nights could begin. The first few nights were a little tough, but it wasn’t long before Andrew was used to the new time zone. After he was ready and sleeping well again, Grandma & Grandpa took over babysitting for an evening while Nicole & Joel visited a medieval German Christmas market in Siegburg. We kept the cell phone handy in case Andrew had a crisis, but no call came. Naturally Grandma & Grandpa got along well with Andrew!

Since the grandparents could not be in Japan to celebrate his first birthday in person, we had a second little celebration complete with wonderful homemade cake from Grandpa. After initially making a bunch of funny faces, Andrew eventually got down to business and enjoyed his cake… especially the Marzipan.

Since Joel could only stay for 2 weeks, we were quite busy with visiting friends. Everywhere we went we were spoiled with delicious food & drink. Again, thank you everyone!


Sandra & her boyfriend Marcel gave us our Christmas gift a little early and treated us to a day trip to the Christmas markets in Muenster. We had a wonderful day together seeing the sights and sampling Gluehwein & holiday snacks, and we finished it all off with dinner in a classic old-style German restaurant.
We enjoyed a quiet Christmas time at home with the family. Andrew got to open his gifts first. He seemed to enjoy the paper and ribbons more than the gifts except for one item; his Karaoke book! Now he is a real pro and can sing along and dance too!

We received an extra special gift from Willy & Inge: A beautiful portrait of Andrew, which was painted by an artist they met in Bulgaria.

Once Christmas time was past, it was time for Joel to pack up his bags. Nicole & Andrew had another 2 weeks longer. She made another shipment via military post and packing those boxes was no small task. New Year’s Eve was a quiet affair at home with Andrew & Nicole and the grandparents. It was especially quiet since everyone but Grandpa was a little under the weather. Unfortunately Joel had to work on New Year’s Eve, but had the opportunity to deliver the first Military baby born in Japan for 2008. There were actually 2 deliveries early that morning, and it even made it in the "Stars & Stripes". For Grandpa’s birthday, the whole family went to Cologne to eat at a restaurant called “Im Marienbild". This was a place Willy had enjoyed with his mother 40 years before. Naturally it had changed a bit since those days, but with all of the historical photos you can see how it used to be. Andrew really enjoyed this outing as well. He got his own menu, placed his own order, and was especially interested in the waiter and his beer tray.

Aunt Sandra came by and picked up Andrew, Nicole & grandma, and took everyone to a local petting zoo. Andrew had a great time and was very interested in looking at all the animals. Later we went out in the garden behind the house and looked at the “Andrew Tree” that was a gift from his grandparents. It was naturally quite chilly out there, but it was nice to see that the tree, just like Andrew, has a grown a bit. To close, we have to put to rest the question of whether or not Andrew had mastered walking while in Germany. What do you think? Yes! He can definitely walk on his own. Of course this is really great, but on the other hand, it means that Nicole is going to get a lot less done in the future since she can no longer take her eyes of Andrew!

Just as we were all back together again in Japan, the "Noro-Virus” took hold of Andrew & Nicole. Fortunately after a few days, they were both back to normal. Joel will soon be leaving for a 2 week course in Texas.
