Dezember/December 2010 - Juni/June 2011

Ich kann es nicht fassen, nun ist schon wieder ein halbes Jahr vergangen, bis ich es geschafft habe unseren Blog zu aktualisieren. VIEL SPASS bei den News der Ahlgrims! Es gibt einige neue Fotos die ihr findet, wenn ihr rechts auf “Photos” geht und das Passwort eingebt.

Joel:
Wir hatten über Weihnachten den ersten 3-wöchigen Familienurlaub in Deutschland genossen, für Joel einmalig, denn so viel Urlaub hatte er noch nie an einem Stück.
Er arbeitet immer noch in der Notfallaufnahme und in seiner Klinik als “family practice Doktor”. Ihm gefaellt die Arbeit eigentlich gut, ausser im Moment in der “Umziehphase” (PCS Season). Denn einige Aerzte gehen wieder zurueck in die USA und die Neuen sind noch nicht da, d.h. mehr Arbeit fuer die, die zurueckbleibenden. Aber in ca. 2 Monaten muesste alles wieder beim Alten sein.
Joel hat sich zu einer sehr interessanten Aufgabe gemeldet: Im Juli wird er bei dem letzten Start der Space Shuttle Atlantis im “Space Shuttle Support Team” dabei sein (Atlantis, STS-135) . Es gibt 2 Stellen in Spanien und noch viele Weitere auf der ganzen Welt. Diese Stellen werden mit Aertzen besetzt, die im Fall eines Problems bei dem Start des Space Shuttle sofort zur Stelle sind, dort wo die Notlandung stattfindet.
Außerdem war Joel 2x in den Staaten zu Fortbildungskonferenzen (San Diego & Washington DC). In seiner Freizeit geniesst er es mit den Kids zu spielen und versucht Zeit zu finden für sein grosses Hobby, dem Schneiden unserer Familienvideos.

Nicole:
Zu unserem 10. Hochzeitstag, den wir dieses Jahr feiern konnten (Wahnsinn, wie die Zeit vergeht!), hat mir mein Mann eine Gitarre mit Gitarrenunterricht geschenkt,, Gitarre spielen wollte ich schon immer mal lernen. Soweit es das “Familienunternehmen” zuläßt, versuche ich Zeit zum Üben zu finden, was leider in der Sommerzeit sehr zu wünschen übrig läßt. Bisher hatte ich 2 Unterrichtsstunden und festgestellt, dass es gar nicht so einfach ist wie ich es mir vorgestellt habe. Leider nicht regelmaessig aber so oft ich kann spiele ich “Padel”, es ist eine Kombination von Tennis & Squash. Und die “Girls Game Nights” dürfen natürlich auch nicht fehlen. Ein weiteres Highlight für mich war Skilaufen in Spanien. Joel hat 2 Tage auf die Kids aufgepasst und so bin ich mit 3 Mädels in der Sierra Nevada gewesen (ca. 4 Std. entfernt).
Ich weiss nicht, ob ihr Euch in YouTube mal den “Mom Song” von Anita Renfroe angeguckt habt, sie singt von einem ganz normalen Tag einer Mutter - super witzig (es gibt noch eine andere Version mit Text, welche vielleicht einfacher mitzuverfolgen ist).. Diese Frau war hier auf dem Base und hatte eine 2 Std. Show, ich habe schon lange nicht mehr so gelacht wie an diesem Abend.
Leider ziehen diesen Sommer sehr viele von unseren Freunden und Bekannten zurück in die USA, was sehr schade ist, aber so ist es eben mit dem Militaerleben (es ist immer ein Kommen und Gehen….).


Andrew:
“Awesome Andrew” (wie Grandpa Alan ihn nennt) ist mittlerweile 4 1/2 Jahre alt und schon so erwachsen. Das letzte Schuljahr war er in der “Spanish Immersion” Vorschule hier auf dem Base und hatte Mitte Juni den Abschluss auf amerikanische Art & Weise, nennt sich “Graduation” (mit Doktorhut und Umhang). Mit der Schule hat er einige Ausflüge gemacht wie z.B.: zum Zahnarzt (ob man es glaubt oder nicht, aber danach hatte er tatsächlich keine Angst mehr vor dem Zahnarzt), Bienenmuseum und den Zoo in Jerez. Ausserdem hatten sie eine “Feria Show” in der Schule, wo Andrew mit einem typisch spanischen Flamenco-Anzug und Hut ganz stolz auf der Bühne “Sevilliana” getanzt hat (die DVD von dieser Veranstaltung wird es leider erst nächstes Jahr zu kaufen geben, habt also noch etwas Geduld … ha ha ha ☺).
Ausserdem ist Andrew unsere kleine “Sportskanone”. Gerade hat er seinen Baseball Unterricht beendet und fängt zum Sommeranfang mit Schwimmunterricht an. Seit 2 Wochen fährt Andrew ohne Stützräder mit dem Fahrrad, was für mich nicht wirklich von Vorteil ist, denn wenn ich jogge und mich Andrew mit dem Fahrrad begleitet, kann ich nicht mehr mithalten ….. urgs!
Wir sind sehr stolz auf unsere Sportskanone.

Emily:
“Sweet Little Emily” (wie Grandpa Alan sie nennt) hatte gerade ihren 2. Geburtstag. Dieses Jahr haben wir an dem Tag einen Familienausflug zum Zoo in Jerez gemacht. WIr hatten einen schönen Tag und zum Abschluss gab es eine Eis-Geburtstagstorte … lecker!
Sie liebt ihren Bruder und würde gern dauernd mit ihm zusammen spielen. Andrew macht das auch gern, aber manchmal möchte er lieber allein in seinem Zimmer spielen und seine Spielsachen nicht mit ihr teilen. Dazu gibt es eine witzige Geschichte: Andrew hat seine und Emily’s Spardose genommen und wollte Geld aus seiner Spardose nehmen und in ihre tun, da habe ich gefragt was er denn da machen würde und er meinte nur: “Ich möchte Emily ein bisschen Geld in ihre Spardose geben, damit sie sich Spielsachen kaufen kann und nicht immer mit meinen spielt”. Tja so sind unsere zwei Süßen eben ☺.
Sie ist ein fröhlicher kleiner Sonnenschein und Wirbelwind, der uns alle zum Lachen bringt, allerdings weiss sie auch was sie will und das zeigt sie uns sehr gut.
Wir versuchen ihr gerade so langsam beizubringen, dass sie auf die Toilette gehen soll. Wenn Joel Anfang Juli drei Tage hintereinander frei hat, dann wird es Ernst und wir hoffen, dass das Thema Windeln dann durch ist!? Wir sind auch sehr stolz auf unseren kleinen Sonnenschein und Wirbelwind.

Allgemeines:
Im April und Mai waren zuerst Nicole’s Eltern fuer 3 1/2 Wochen hier und direkt im Anschluss Joel’s Eltern fuer 2 Wochen. Die gemeinsame Zeit haben wir sehr genossen. Es ist immer sehr schön Besuch von Familie und Freunden zu bekommen. Wir haben mit ihnen ein paar Tages-/Sightseeing Touren gemacht: Gibraltar, Baelo Claudia, Tarifa, Osborne Bodegas, Doña Blanca National Park, Campo Abierto (Bull Breeding Ranch).
Am 15. Juni war Mondfinsternis. Mit unseren Nachbarn bin ich in die Stadt Puerto de Santa Maria gefahren um dieses Naturschaupiel zu beobachten. Anfangs konnten wir nichts sehen, da es zu bewölkt war, aber nach einiger Zeit hatten wir eine klare Sicht – das war grandios!
Da dieses Base ein spanisches Base ist, sind hier auch einige spanische Militärschiffe stationiert, wie u.a. das neue Schiff “Juan Carlos I” (was noch kein Jahr alt ist). Wir hatten die Möglichkeit dieses Schiff zu besichten, da wir den CO (Commanding Officer) auf einer Fete kennengelernt haben. Hinzu hat ein amerikanisches Nuclear U-Boot hier Zwischenstation gemacht, so hatten wir das grosse Glück und haben eine Führung auf diesem bekommen. Was etwas Besonderes ist, denn normalerweise kann man sich ein Nuclear U-Boot nicht anschauen. Es war ein sehr interessantes Erlebnis. Täglich fliegt das weltgrößte Militär-Flugzeug C-5 (die Lockheed C-5 Galaxy ist ein militärisches Großraum-transportflugzeug, das Anfang der 1960er Jahre für die US Air Force entwickelt wurde und dort bis heute im Einsatz ist.) den Militär-Flughafen auf unserem Base an, und auch hier hatten wir die Chance es zu besichtigen. Wir sind noch ein Jahr hier und dann wollen wir mal schaun’ wohin es dann geht!?

I can hardly believe it, but it has already been over half a year since the blog has been updated. Have fun reading all the latest news from the Ahlgrims! There are also plenty of new pictures available through the photo link once you put in the password.

Joel:
This last Christmas we spent an extra-long vacation in Germany. This was the longest period of time off, Joel has ever taken and it was very restful and enjoyable.
He is still working at the hospital, alternating between the ER and his Family Medicine clinic. Normally the work is a comfortable pace and not too stressful, but at the moment they are in the military “moving season” so they are currently quite short of staff. That means a lot more to do for those still around. It will be a busy summer, but in 2 months the new folks will be settled in and things should get back to normal.
Joel recently picked up another interesting duty: In July he will be part of the medical “Space Shuttle Support Team” that staffs the emergency landing site here in Spain for the final launch of the Space Shuttle Program. (Atlantis, STS-135) There are two possible “transatlantic abort sites” here in Spain plus plenty more around the world and at every launch each one that could be used (depending on the flight path) gets a medical team just in case of an emergency landing. The NASA folks came out to do the training and teach about all the dangers and toxins associated with non-standard shuttle landings. Since Joel has always loved aerospace technology and this is the end of an era, it is especially interesting. As long as the launch isn’t postponed past his 3 days of duty coverage, he will get to be a (very small) part of this history mission.
Aside from that, Joel flew back to the USA twice for training in the last 6 months. (San Diego and Washington D.C.) One was for a medical informatics conference (military electronic health systems) and the second was for a professional development course. When he is at home his time is pretty much filled with playing with the kids or on his biggest hobby; working video projects.

Nicole:
For our 10th Anniversary (how time flies!) which we celebrated last May, Nicole received a classical guitar as well as some lessons. Learning to play guitar was one of those things Nicole had always wanted to do. She is awfully busy keeping the house running and the kids under control so finding time to practice has been a real challenge. So far she has had 2 lessons and quickly learned that it is not as easy as she had thought it would be.
Although she can’t get out as often as she would like, Nicole has begun playing “Padel” which is a popular game here in Spain. It is somewhere between tennis and
racquetball, so naturally Nicole is very good at it. She also continues to host her “Girls Game Nights” periodically. Another recent highlight for Nicole was a Ski trip here in Spain. While Joel watched the kids for 2 days (no ER visits required) Nicole joined 3 ladies for a trip to Sierra Nevada which is about 4 hrs away.
Nicole was also able to see comedian Anita Renfroe here on the base. She is the one who came up with “Mom Song” (you can find her on YouTube) which rapidly goes through a typical mother’s daily routine to the tune of the William Tell Overture. She thoroughly enjoyed the 2 hr show and never laughed so much on one evening. Unfortunately quite a few friends are moving out this summer to return to the US. It is hard to see people we have come to know well move away, but the coming and going is all part and parcel of the Military life.

Andrew:
“Awesome Andrew” (as Grandpa Alan calls him) is now 4 ½ and growing up fast. He was in the Spanish Immersion program at the base preschool last year. It was great and he had some wonderful experiences like the “Feria” show where Andrew and his classmates learned some traditional Flamenco dances and performed them on stage in front of the parents. (check out the pictures, but the DVD will not be available for purchase until next year however, so be patient! Ha ha ha) Andrew learned a lot of Spanish and enjoyed plenty of field trips like touring the dentist’s office, a honey producing farm/bee museum, and the Zoo. His class just finished the year with a graduation ceremony; caps and gowns and all! Now he is on summer vacation but will start kindergarten in the Spanish system in September. Andrew is also becoming quite the athlete. He just finished his beginning tee-ball and has now started swimming lessons. For the last 2 weeks he has been riding his bike without training wheels. This is great since he can now really set the pace when he rides while we go jogging! ….. ugh! We are very proud of him.

Emily:
“Sweet Little Emily” (as Grandpa Alan says) just turned 2. We celebrated with a family outing to the zoo and finished it up with an ice cream cake! Yummy!
She adores her big brother and always wants to play with him. They do pretty well, but sometimes he needs a little time for himself in his room, so he doesn’t have to share his favorite toys. A funny story on that note… Andrew had taken Emily’s coin bank and wanted to put some of his own money into hers. When Nicole asked why, he said, “I want to give Emily some money so she can buy some more toys instead of always taking mine!” That is how it goes with these two characters.
Emily is a friendly ray of sunshine and a ball of energy. She really makes us laugh. She also knows exactly what she wants and is good at making that known. The next step is to get her toilet trained. Joel has three days off for the Independence Day holiday and will keep Andrew occupied and out of the house so Nicole can do an intensive toilet training program “Potty Training in 3 Days” with her. We hope that soon the diaper days will be behind us. We’ll see, but in any case we are very pleased and proud of our little whirlwind.

General:
In April and May Nicole’s parents came for a 3 ½ week visit. Once they left, the vacancy was quickly filled by Joel’s parents for 2 weeks. We enjoyed all the time together. It is always fun to see family and friends. While we had guests, we stayed busy with a lot of fun sightseeing. We saw places like Gibraltar, Baelo Claudia, Tarifa, Osborne Bodegas, Doña Blanca National Park, and Campo Abierto (a fighting bull breeding ranch).
On June 15th, Nicole went over to Puerto de Santa Maria to watch the total lunar eclipse. It was amazing to see that natural spectacle. At first it was a bit cloudy but cleared in time for a great view.
Since this is a Spanish base that we are a “guest Command” of, we are able to see some of their military attractions as well. The “Juan Carlos I” is the new flagship and recently made Rota its homeport. We were able to tour the ship since we met the CO at a garden party. After that, an American submarine transited through the area and opened its hatches for guests for an afternoon. This was quite a treat for us (and Nicole’s parents). Since getting inside an American nuclear-powered attack sub is not a common occurrence.
Every day we hear the roar of military cargo jets like the C-5 ( Lockheed C-5 Galaxy) overhead. This is one of the biggest in the world and we were recently able to get a nice tour of one of these with Nicole’s parents as well.
We have one more year here in Spain, so who knows what we’ll see next where we’ll go afterward!?

März/March - November 2010

Endlich kommt auch mal wieder ein Update von uns. Es ist Wahnsinn wie die Zeit vergeht, Weihnachten naht mit grossen Schritten und die Hälfte unserer Zeit in Spanien ist auch schon vorbei. Noch 1 ½ Jahre, dann gehen wir nach 7 Jahren in Japan (4 Jahre) und in Spanien (3 Jahre), wieder zurueck in die USA.

Dieses Jahr hatten wir, dank mehrerer Besuche unserer Eltern und Nicole’s Schwester, endlich mal die Möglichkeit unsere “Wahl-Heimat” Andalusien zu erkunden. Es gibt viele wunderschöne Plätze hier.
Joel & Nicole waren für 4 Tage alleine in Granada und haben sich die berühmte Alhambra angeguckt. Eines der weißen Dörfer wie Vejer de la Frontera und die Stadt Ronda sind wunderschön und für Naturliebhaber ist der Nationalpark “El Torcal” in Antequerra zu empfehlen. Die Städte Sevilla, Cordoba und Gibraltar sollte man auch nicht verpassen. Den Reiseführer haben wir bald durch ;-)

Die Spanier wissen wie man feiert, davon haben wir uns auf verschiedenen spanischen Festen überzeugt, wie der Semana Santa (Prozessionen zu Ostern), das bekannte Pferderennen am Strand in Sanlucar und dem Sherry-und Flamenco-Festival in Jerez.
Ein “Muß” in Spanien ist in jedem Fall sich einen Stierkampf anzuschauen. Es war nicht schön mit anzusehen wie der Stier getötet wird, aber es ist eben ein typisch spanische Tradition. Allerdings hatten wir das seltene Glück mitzuerleben wie ein Stier nicht getötet wurde. So einen Stierkampf muessen wir uns nicht mehr angucken.

Andrew ist mittlerweile 4 Jahre alt und geht hier auf dem Base in eine englisch/spanische Vorschule. Die Lehrer sind Spanier, sprechen allerdings auch Englisch mit den Kindern. Während viel gespielt und gebastelt wird bringen sie den Kindern spielerisch die spanische Sprache bei. Andrew ist begeistert und lernt so neben Englisch und Deutsch nun schon eine 3. Sprache. Ihm fällt das überhaupt nicht schwer.
Freizeitangebote für Kinder sind in unserer Umgebung eher rar, hier dreht sich alles um Sonne, Strand und Meer. Daher sind wir sehr dankbar, daß auf dem Base einige Aktivitäten für die Kinder angeboten werden. So war Andrew im Sommer beschäftigt mit Schwimm- und Fußballkursen und Sommercamps.
Im Herbst und Winter gestaltet sich das schwieriger, sobald die Touristen-Saison vorbei ist werden in den umliegenden Städten die Bürgersteige hochgeklappt, man sieht kaum Menschen in den Orten und sogar viele Geschäfte und Restaurants sind geschlossen. Man fühlt sich manchmal wie in einer Geisterstadt. Und dann fällt es richtig schwer abwechslungsreiches Unterhaltungsprogramm für die Kinder zu finden.

So war ein Besuch in Deutschland im Frühjahr für Andrew toll, denn da konnte er so Sachen wie Besuche im Zoo, Legoland, U-Bahn- und Bus-Fahren und vieles mehr machen. Das Angebot ist in Deutschland einfach grösser.

Emily ist mittlerweile 1 1/2 Jahre alt, sie kann schon laufen, beherrscht ein bisschen die Baby-Zeichensprache und spricht ihre ersten Worte (in Deutsch und Englisch). Sie ist sehr aktiv und moechte am liebsten immer nur nach draussen, das zeigt sie uns indem sie ihre Schuhe holt und sich damit demonstrativ an die Tür stellt... es ueberrascht mich immer wieder wie früh Kinder ihren eigenen Kopf haben …. Ha ha ha!

Joel musste dieses Jahr nach New Orleans/USA und Lakenheath/England zu Konferenzen fliegen um seine Medizin-Lizenzen aufzufrischen. Außerdem war er beruflich fuer 3 Tage auf einem U-Boot. Auf den U-Booten gibt es keine Ärzte und wenn Jemand ein medizinischen Problem hat und einen Arzt benötigt, dann wird ein Arzt von einem Krankenhaus, wo sie sich gerade in der Nähe einer Stadt befinden, hingeschickt.
Wenn Joel nicht gerade arbeitet oder die Familie ihn auf Trab hält, beschäftigt er sich weiterhin mit dem Erstellen von Familien-Videos. Über die letzten Monate hat er sich ein professionelleres Program beigebracht und somit werden die Videos immer schoener. Wenn ihr uns mal besuchen kommt, dann koennt ihr Euch gerne mal einige angucken! Abgefärbt von dem Deutschen liebstes Getränk, braut er sich immer noch sein eigenes Bier. Allerdings nur Dunkel-Biere.

Mit Nicole’s kleinem Familienunternehmen (Ehefrau & Mutter ☺) kommt sie im Moment zu nichts mehr. Jede Mutter kennt das wohl, am Ende des Tages fragt man sich, was man eigentlich den ganzen Tag gemacht hat und kann die Frage nicht mal beantworten und ist frustriert, dass trotzdem keine Zeit für eigene Wünsche und Hobbys bleibt. Aber was man zurück bekommt ist unbezahlbar!!! Denn es gibt nichts Schöneres als mitzuerleben wie Andrew & Emily die Welt erkunden und sich entwickeln.

Unser schoenstes Ereignis in diesem Jahr war unser erster richtiger Familienurlaub zu viert: Wir haben eine Mittelmeer-Kreuzfahrt auf der “Disney Magic” gemacht. Dieses
Schiff ist wie Disneyland und somit perfekt geeignet für Familien. Die Kinder sind den ganzen Tag beschäftigt mit tollen Aktionen und treffen die Disney-Figuren – obwohl unseren Kindern eher vor Angst die Tränen kullerten ;-)
Wir sind fürstlich verwöhnt worden, jeder Wunsch wurde uns von den Augen abgelesen, es war wie im Paradies, Erholung pur und wir hatten sogar Zeit für uns - Luxus! Aufgrund der tollen Kinderbetreuung haben wir einige Ausflüge ganz unproblematisch alleine bzw. nur mit Emily gamacht. Fuer Emily hatten wir einen Baby-Rucksack, was jeden Ausflug einfach gemacht hat. Sie hat sich hier und da mal kurz gemeldet wenn sie Hunger hatte, aber sonst saß sie ganz friedlich in dem Rucksack und hat sich alle Sehenswürdigkeiten mit angeguckt.

Außerem hatten wir die Möglichkeit eine Tour auf einem spanischen Militaerschiff, der “Pizzaro” zu bekommen. Der CO/Chef hat uns auf dem Schiff rumgeführt und am Ende mit einem Tapas Büffet auf der Brücke verwöhnt. Das war eine tolle Erfahrung.

Die “Feier-Saison” haben wir bereits früh eingeläutet mit einer Oktoberfest Party bei uns im Garten. Danach haben wir die amerikanischen Feste wie Halloween und Thanksgiving gefeiert. Nun freuen wir uns auf unseren Deutschlandbesuch, wo wir alle 4 zusammen mit Nicole’s Familie die Weihnachtsfeiertage & Silvester verbringen. Wir können es kaum abwarten auf die umliegenden Weihnachtsmärkte in Weihnachtsstimmung zu kommen und bei kalter Temperatur einen Glühwein zu trinken.

It is finally time for another update from us. It is really shocking just how time gets away. Christmas is around the corner again and we have already reached the midpoint of our tour in Spain. In another 18 months we will be returning to the United States after living 7 years abroad! (4 in Japan and 3 in Spain).

Thanks to lots of visits from both sets of parents and Nicole’s sister Sandra, we had a lot of opportunities to get to know our “adopted home” of Andalusia quite well this last year. There are a lot of nice places to see. Nicole and Joel were able to take a trip to Granada for 4 days and see the famous Alhambra (alone!).
We have also seen many of the famous white villages of Andalusia. Places like Vejer de la Frontera and Ronda are really a unique atmosphere. We have also seen some great natural beauty in places like “El Torcal National Park” in Antequerra. In addition to those, we have been to Sevilla, Cordoba and Gibraltar. Looks like we are well on our way of getting all the way through our tour books.

The Spanish really know how to have a good time. They seem to have a festival for everything. We have had a few good tastes of some of them like “Semana Santa” (Holy week), the tapas festival, horseraces on the beach in Sanlucar, and the Sherry & Flamenco Festival in Jerez.

Another “must see” in Spain are the famous bullfights. While there is definitely plenty of excitement, drama, and grace, it is not always so nice to see the bulls meet their ends. As it turned out, we came on a good day and saw something unusual. One of the bulls put up such a good show of strength and bravery that at the urging of the crowd, one of the bulls was granted a pardon and allowed to retire in peace. We are happy to have seen this unusual occurrence at our one (and likely only) bullfight experience.

Andrew is now 4 years old and is now spending half-days in a Spanish immersion preschool on the base. Under the supervision of their Spanish teachers, the kids sing songs, make crafts, and play
games while picking up the Spanish language as they play. Andrew really likes it and is learning very fast. Soon he’ll be proficient in 3 languages and doesn’t seem to find it difficult in the least.

Despite the many tourism options, recreation options for kids in this area are rather sparse. Pretty much everything revolves around sun, sand, and sea. We are very thankful that the base does provide a few options. Andrew stayed busy with swimming, soccer classes, and summer camps. In the fall and winter things are tougher. Once the summer tourist season is over the city practically shutters up the windows and rolls up the sidewalks. The area becomes almost a ghost town. Finding fun activities for the kids becomes difficult, and being kept indoors for weeks by rain only adds to it all.

Coming from this situation, a visit to Germany early in the spring was great for Andrew. He was able to see the zoo, Legoland, and ride on busses and subways. There was just a lot more for him to do and he had a wonderful time. Emily enjoyed it less so since she was sick with an ear infection for the first part of the visit.

Emily is now 1 1/2 years old. She can walk well, uses a little baby sign-language, and is now speaking and saying more and more (some English and some German). She tries to copy every word we say. She is very active and loves to play outside whenever possible. She gets the message across by going to pick up her shoes and then standing by the door. It is amazing how quickly kids develop their own distinct will as well as figure out how to make it known to everyone else…. Ha ha ha!

Around the same time Nicole and the kids went to Germany in the spring, Joel travelled back to the States for some medical conferences and training to keep up his licensure as well as get some new certifications.

After getting back, Joel got an interesting and short assignment from the Navy. A submarine was transiting through the area when a potentially serious medical issue came up. Since it was not something that would normally be handled by the on board medical corpsman, a call for medical support came to our hospital, and Joel was brought aboard to oversee things. Everything turned out fine and was quickly resolved, but since the boat had to immediately submerge and continue its operations, Joel ended up aboard for about 3 days until the sub was able to surface again and meet the transfer boat.
When he is not busy at the hospital or busy with the kids, Joel keeps busy working on our family home videos. He recently upgraded to some more complicated and professional software, so our movies keep getting nicer. If you come by, we’ll be happy to share them. In addition to that, he also continues to brew some interesting beer when he can.

With Nicole’s “Family Business” as wife and mother, she is pretty much always busy and trying to play catch up. Nothing ever seems to get completed before the next urgent project gets started. As every mother has experienced, she gets to the end of the day, and asks herself what
she did all day. Somehow little progress is made, but she is still too busy to do much for herself or continue any hobbies. Still, the payback is great. There is no greater reward than to watch Andrew and Emily develop and to care for them as they grow.

Our family highlight for the year was taking our first family vacation together as a foursome. We took an 11-day Mediterranean cruise aboard the “Disney Magic”. This was really a great way to enjoy a vacation with the kids. The adults had a lot of time to relax and enjoy themselves and Andrew stayed busy with all kinds of action and activities when he wasn’t with us. Although most of the kids liked to meet the Disney characters, ours preferred to keep them at a distance. It was tears instead of laughter if they got too close! We were really spoiled and treated to every luxury. It was a great time to relax and enjoy and really exceeded out expectations. Thanks to the wonderful childcare activities for Andrew offered aboard, we were able to more easily enjoy some day trips as well. Emily stayed with us in her trusty baby backpack through every tour. She would only fuss when she was hungry, and otherwise rode around happily enjoying the sights.

Shortly after the cruise, we were treated to a personal tour of a Spanish navy ship (the Pizarro) conducted by its’ captain. At the end of the tour we enjoyed a relaxing tapas buffet he had prepared for us on the bridge. It was a great experience for us all.

The holiday party season started early for us when we hosted an Oktoberfest Party in our backyard. That was followed by Halloween parties, and Thanksgiving. Soon we’ll be back in Germany again for Christmas. All 4 of us will be together this year for both Christmas and New Year’s which is unusual for us. We are looking forward to enjoying the crisp, cold air while sipping “Glühwein” at the beautiful Christmas markets.
